The history of Syracuse and Sicily begins in the eighth century BC with the Greek colonization. More than a hundred colonies were founded by the Greeks and many of this equality in power and civilization in the same homeland.
The name derives from the Sicilian Syracuse Syraka (plenty of water) for the presence of many rivers and a wetland.
